1. Your Life, Your Responsibility
Here's a real story. Last summer at a petrochemical plant, a heat exchanger cleaning job was underway. A new guy took off his acid-resistant gloves because it was hot — just to tighten a pump fitting. The fitting loosened and residual Sulfamic Acid solution (only about 5% concentration) sprayed onto his hand. His skin was red and burning for three days. He was lucky: he ran to the eyewash station immediately. No scar.
That's the best-case scenario. Replace that with 30% HCl or — worse — hydrofluoric acid, and the story ends differently. HF is insidious: you don't feel it right away. Hours later, when fluoride ions have chelated the calcium in your tissues, the pain goes all the way to the bone. That's a life-changing injury.
Rule number one in this industry: PPE isn't for show — it's what keeps you alive. The China Industrial Cleaning Association's incident data shows that over 80% of chemical injuries happen during moments when someone thought "I'll just be a second." Don't be that person.
2. PPE: Getting It Right From Head to Toe
Head: Hard hat — non-negotiable. If you're working inside a reactor or tank, add a bump cap liner. And if there's any risk of overhead liquid dripping, switch to a chemical-resistant hooded hard hat. Standard hard hats don't stop liquid penetration.
Eyes and face: This is the most vulnerable zone and the most commonly skipped. When mixing acids, wear a full-face shield — not just safety goggles. Your window to flush it out is about 15 seconds before permanent damage begins.

Keep two types on site: thick Nitrile for mixing and operating, thin disposable Nitrile for sampling and testing. If the inside of your glove feels damp or you spot even a pinhole, swap it out. No exceptions.
Body: Acid-resistant coveralls, not standard workwear. The fabric should be smooth-surfaced to prevent liquid wicking. Tuck trousers into acid-resistant boots — never roll them up. Acid running down a pant leg into a boot is a classic accident, and it happens every year. Add a chemical-resistant apron when mixing — the chest and thigh areas catch the most splash.
Feet: Steel-toe, steel-shank acid-resistant boots. Ordinary rubber boots dissolve on contact with strong acids. Keep laces tucked in.
Respiratory: If you're using HCl indoors or in poor ventilation, the fumes will hit you hard. Wear at minimum a half-face respirator with acid gas cartridges. For confined space work (inside a tank or reactor), a supplied-air system or SCBA is mandatory — filter cartridges alone can't compensate for potentially low oxygen levels.
3. Chemical Burns: Flush, Strip, Call
When a chemical hits skin, panic is the real enemy. Three steps, in order: Flush. Strip. Call.
Flush: Immediate, copious water — at least 15 minutes. Don't waste time looking for neutralizing agents. Water is the best first aid you have. Let the water flow across the affected area rather than blasting directly onto it — you don't want to spread the chemical. For eye exposure, use an eyewash station, hold eyelids open with your fingers, and rotate the eyeball in all directions to ensure every surface gets rinsed.
Strip: Remove contaminated clothing while flushing. Clothes soaked with acid continue burning the skin underneath — water alone won't stop that. Cut or tear garments off rather than pulling them over your head, to avoid secondary contact with the face.
Call: Get to emergency care. Tell the doctors exactly what chemical, what concentration, and how long the contact was. For hydrofluoric acid burns, spell it out clearly — most ER doctors don't encounter HF routinely and need to know to use calcium gluconate gel. We keep two tubes of HF emergency gel on every service vehicle for precisely this scenario.
One critical point: alkali burns (NaOH) are more dangerous than acid burns. Acid coagulates protein, forming a protective barrier that slows deeper penetration. Alkali saponifies tissue and keeps going deeper. For alkali exposure, extend flushing to at least 30 minutes.
4. Confined Spaces: The Dangers You Can't See
Reactors, storage tanks, heat exchanger shell sides — these are all confined spaces. Three killers: oxygen deficiency, toxic gas, flammable gas.
Before entry, three mandatory checks:
- Gas detection: Oxygen must be 19.5%–23.5%. Combustible gas below 10% LEL. H₂S and CO must read zero. Use a 4-gas monitor — never rely on your nose.
- Forced ventilation: Explosion-proof blower through the manway, minimum 30 minutes before entry. Do not stop ventilation during the job.
- Buddy system: One person inside, one person watching at the manway. The attendant holds the safety harness line and never takes eyes off the opening. If the person inside stops responding, pull them out — do NOT go in after them. That's how you get two casualties instead of one.
One more thing people forget: acid cleaning produces hydrogen gas. HCl on carbon steel generates H₂. Hydrogen's explosive range is 4%–75% in air — extremely wide. No smoking, no hot work anywhere near an acid cleaning operation. Every year there are explosion incidents because someone lit a cigarette or struck a spark near an acid tank. This isn't a theoretical risk.

Q: Can I use a regular surgical mask instead of a respirator?
Absolutely not. Surgical masks block droplets and dust — they do nothing against HCl, NH₃, or any gas molecule. At minimum, use a half-face respirator with acid gas cartridges on any acid cleaning site. A cartridge costs a few dollars. Your lungs don't have a replacement option.
Q: I got a few drops of acid on my hand — rinsing for a minute is enough, right?
Wrong. Flush under running water for at least 15 full minutes. Many people stop after 10–20 seconds when the stinging eases up, then it comes back worse — because acid that penetrated the skin hasn't been fully diluted. Rinse the full 15 minutes, then apply burn cream or seek medical attention.
Q: When mixing acid solution — acid into water, or water into acid?
Always remember: Acid into water, never the reverse. This is especially critical with concentrated sulfuric acid — adding water to acid causes instant boiling and violent splashing. Procedure: fill the mixing tank with water first, then slowly add acid while stirring continuously. Full-face shield and chemical apron throughout the process.
Q: My work clothes got splashed with acid — can I just wash them at home later?
No. Contaminated clothing must be removed immediately on site and rinsed with large volumes of water. Wearing acid-soaked clothes means continuous skin exposure — by the time you feel the burn, damage has already occurred. Keep a spare set of coveralls in the service vehicle. It costs almost nothing and could save your skin.
Q: What if my employer won't provide proper PPE?
Let's be honest — some small contractors cut corners on safety gear. But you need to understand: when something goes wrong, it's your body that pays the price, not the boss's.
